This position is similar to an assistant professorship, but does not come with a professor title. While different specializations within hydrogeology are possible as the research profile of the position, we prefer candidates with a strong background in reactive-transport modeling. Berkeley Lab’s Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to focus on reactive transport modeling at the watershed scale.
In this role, you will quantify bi-directional exchange pathways and biogeochemical processes across river corridor subsystems (i.e. hyporheic zones, off-channel wetlands, and floodplains). These subsystems are identifiable as unique systems that allow bi-directional exchange between river channels and nearby sediments. Boston University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to model coastline evolution in Massachusetts, USA. The postdoctoral researcher will use the numerical models Delft3D and SWAN to determine sediment transport dynamics along an energetic indented shoreline characterized by a tidal inlet, a tombolo, a tidal river mouth and varying levels of human development. The goal of the project is to determine the long-term evolution of a complex shoreline under the effect of sea level rise, with particular emphasis on non-linear feedbacks among landscape units.
The model will be calibrated with extensive field measurements collected by Dr. Duncan Fitzgerald at BU and Dr. Chris Hein at VIMS, with the possibility for the postdoc to participate to the field campaigns. The study area encompasses Horseneck Beach State Reservation (https://www.mass.gov/locations/horseneck-beach-state-reservation) and Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary (https://www.massaudubon.org/get-outdoors/wildlife-sanctuaries/allens-pond). This project is a collaboration between BU, VIMS, Woods Hole Group and the Buzzards Bay Coalition.

Boston University seeks to hire an endowed chair in Environmental Data Science, with specific focus on the theory and applications of data science to Environmental Science and Sustainability, to begin in the Fall 2023 semester pending Provost budgetary approval. The candidate we seek will be an exceptional scholar with a proven record of high-impact research at the interface of data science, environment, and sustainability. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed with tenure in Boston University’s Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences and in the Department of Earth and Environment. (Gridded Surface/Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis) or other similar models, hydrological
model development, calibration, application, and verification. Anticipated methodologies
include data assimilation (DA) techniques that leverage in-situ soil moisture
observations and remotely sensed observations, improving hydrologic model
parameterization, calibration and determining the most appropriate unbiased
atmospheric forcings for hydrologic model applications from NWP output. Experience in
developing observed datasets for forcing hydrologic models and operating hydrologic
models in a forecasting mode using NWPs or other sources is desired. Experience and
familiarity with water management engineering applications including reservoir
management systems is also desired. The position would work with collaborators and
continually develop relationships between CW3E and U.S. Army Engineer Research
and Development Center (ERDC) as well as NOAA’s National Water Center and the
California-Nevada River Forecast Center.
