Full Professorship Hydrogeology

The position is to be filled as part of an early appointment programme to find a successor for the professorship in Applied Geology/Hydrogeology. We are looking for an outstanding person with extensive research and teaching experience covering the field of applied geology and with a strong focus on the geomechanics and/or hydrogeology of sedimentary systems. In addition, relevant research experience is expected in one or more of the following areas: coastal erosion, slope stability, permafrost, groundwater resources, geothermal energy or storage in geological formations. We expect applicants with a broad geological background and a strong commitment to field and laboratory-based analytical research. Experience in geomodelling will be viewed as an advantage.


Research should involve scientific contributions to at least one of the following current research priorities of the Institute for Geography and Geology (https://geo.uni-greifswald.de/forschung/geo2/): i) Environmental change in geosystems, ii) geohazards and their management, and iii) sustainable use of geo- and natural resources. It will also be considered an advantage to have a research orientation that is compatible with the regional context of the Baltic Sea region. In addition, we expect intensive cooperation with the existing working groups of the institute and contributions to the universities research focus on “Environmental Change - Response and Adaptation” (ECRA).


In teaching, applied geology (including hydrogeology) should be covered in its entire breadth in bachelor's and master's courses. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the new development of an institute-wide master's programme.


International peer-reviewed publications and successful third-party funding in the field of applied geology are expected as is the willingness to participate in committees and academic administration activities. Working experience abroad and the ability to teach in English are also desirable.


Applicants must fulfil the requirements for a university professor according to § 58(1) of the Landeshochschulgesetz – LHG M-V (State Higher Education Act): a university degree, teaching aptitude and academic excellence, which is generally documented by an outstanding doctoral degree, as well as further academic achievements, which, in accordance with § 58(2) LHG M-V, are usually proven by a junior professorship or habilitation.


In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the appointed professor will be assigned the status of a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis) with unlimited tenure; alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee. As a general rule, permanent tenure as a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit) can only be awarded for the first time to persons who have not yet ended their 50th year of life when they enter employment.


The position is open to all persons, irrespective of gender. The university would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented and thus applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable. Women are specifically encouraged to apply for the position. Severely disabled applicants with the same professional and personal qualifications will be also be given preference.


Unfortunately, the application costs (e.g. travel expenses for interviews) will not be reimbursed by the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
