INSTALLING AND RUNNING ARPPRO v3.2                 AINCO-Interocean

        1.  Installation.

        ARPRO consists of a series of subroutines based on MATLAB, and on
        the Institute fuer Meereskunde's software ARTOA/ARTRK by Martin
        Menzel. It uses as input the output files rfc### of the ARTRK
        program, and calls the IfM subroutines rd2dmy and dmy2rd. It
        should therefore be loaded and run in conjunction with the
        aforementioned software.

        The following files should be taken from this directory:

                floatpro.taz.................Matlab Software
		    coastdat.taz.................Coastline data
		    bathydat.taz.................Isobath data

        (optional : instr.doz : more detailed instructions in gzip-ed
        word document).

        The files have been first archived using tar, and then compressed
        using gzip, on a Pentium machine.  The reverse process should be
        followed to decompress and restore the original files. 
 
        We suggest storing the contents of each file to a different 
        subdirectory, for example:
	
        c:\matlab\rafos\floatpro\.........for floatpro, etc.

        The 'PATHS' option in arpro must be used set before processing
        can start.


        The areas for which currently there are maps available are :

        So, just for the data for map plotting, the software requires 6Mb
        of free disk space.

        Once loaded (after changing the Matlab path file [Matlabrc.m])
        simply type 'arpro' from the Matlab prompt. ARPRO has a help
        section ("About..." - full list below) after each option in the
        first figure as well as in later sections.


        2. List of "About..." Sections :


                 Note to version 3.1 : Version 3.1 has two additional features
        - (a) "PATHS" has been replaced with "SETTINGS", which gives either the
        "PATHS" option as before or "SET FLOAT DATA FREQ" which allows the user
        to specify how many position fixes per day are in the float data (b)
        "Specify T" in the "Surface Statistics" option. This can be useful if,
        for example, you wish to find the error of the velocities of one float
        but using a previously calculated value of T.

                Note to version 3.2 : The map selecting options have been made a
        little easier by the addition of clickable buttons, allowing the user to
        easily select the regions of interest. One should still input the
        minimum and maximum longitutes and latitites to zoom in on smaller
        regions. ARPRO should now be fully compatible with data from the Woods
        Hole data archive (http://wfdac.whoi.edu), though because of the
        conversion required its not as fast as with the rfc files. Two things
        to note : I have not yet had time to fully check this, so please report
        any bugs ; ARPRO can handle mixing different data types, but for the
        statistics the data you wish to use should be in the same directory.

                
                Note to version 3.2b : An error in the KE calculations (only
        when using more than one position fix per day) has been corrected. The
        'gmtconv' m-files were written to convert certain parameters to a format
        suitable for use in GMT. 


        HELP :

            'ARPRO allows processing of RAFOS data produced by   ' 
            'the ARTRK program written by Martin Menzel (and     ' 
            'should therefore be in the rfc* format).            '
            'ARPRO allows the processing of float tracks in two  ' 
            'ways :                                              '
            '          - A float at a time                       '
            '          - An analysis of a group of floats        ' 
            '                                                    '
            'In order to load individual float data one has to   '
            'click on "FILE" and then "Open".                    '
            'The variables temp, press, lat, lon, u, v and wwww  '
            'are loaded from the rfc* file.                      '
            '                                                    '
            'The data may be lowpassed (in order to minimise     '
            'tidal influences) by clicking on "PROCESS" and      '
            '"Lowpass". The variables ltemp, llat, lu, lv and    '
            'lwwww are the corresponding lowpassed parameters.   '
            'The temperature and pressure records of the floats  '
            'may also be examined.                               '
            'The user can either carry out the processing        '
            'offered by ARPRO, or return to the Matlab window and'
            'process interactively.                              '
            '                                                    '
            'The Float Summary option is included to print out   '
            'the floats path, temperature and pressure all on the'
            'same plot for use in a e.g. report. By clicking on  '
            'the left and right mouse buttons the user may zoom  '
            'in and out of the data figures.                     '
            '                                                    '
            'When analysing a group of floats the user may plot  '
            'maps and overlay float tracks, create a movie with  '
            'the float tracks, or carry out some statistical     '
            'analysis. At the moment the statistical analysis    '
            'involves computing mean velocities in different grid'
            'boxes, associated eddy diffusivities and Rossby     '
            'number calculations. Estimates of T, L and K as well'
            'as their associated errors are written to a file.   '
            '                                                    '
            'Note : individual help options (About...) are       '
            'available in each section of the initial screen.    '
            '                                                    '
            'This software is still under development. Any       '
            'suggestions are most welcome.                       '

        FILE :

            'OPEN : Opens a new float file. Data with velocities '
            'greater than 998 cm/s (which are sometimes          '
            'encountered at the beginning and end of a file) are '
            'rejected.                                           '
            '                                                    '
            'QUIT : Quits the programme (surprise !)             '


        PROCESS :

            'LOWPASS : Lowpasses data. All data records are      '
            'assumed to be daily. Three types of filters are     '
            'provided - Boxcar, Triangle and Hanning, but other  '
            'options are easily installable. The filter lengths  '
            'available are 3, 5 or 7 points, though again these  '
            'are easily changed. The data are loaded as global   '
            'variables so it is straightforward, once a float    '
            'has been loaded, to return to the MATLAB command    '
            'window and continue processing interactively.       '
            '                                                    '
            'T+P OF FLOAT : Plots the temperature and pressure of'
            'the current loaded float.                           '
            '                                                    '
            'ROSSBY1 : Plots the Rossby number against the       '
            'acceleration of the float.                          '
            '                                                    '
            'ROSSBY2 : Plots the Rossby number on a polar plot.  '
            'Zero degrees corresponds to acceleration parallel to'
            'the Coriolis acceleration and -180 degrees to an    '
            'acceleration opposite to the Coriolis acceleration. '


        HEADER :

            'Shows the header of the current file.               '


        STATISTICS :

            'SURFACE STATISTICS : The desired map limits, grid   '
            'size etc. should be entered. Note that there may be '
            'a need to return to the matlab command window to    '
            'clear the global variable "mapfigure" (type : clear '
            'global mapfigure) if the map limits are changed more'
            'than once. If Eulerian velocities are required (and '
            'the data density is reasonably high) a relatively   '
            'small grid size may be used. If lagrangian stats.   '
            'are wanted then a larger grid size should be used as'
            'the stats. need a large number of observations in   '
            'each box. Click the "About" button on the map figure'
            'to get further instructions and details.            '
            '                                                    '
            'K.E. SPECTRA : Plots K.E. spectra. Both log-log and '
            'and energy conserving spectra may be plotted. There '
            'is also the option of plotting rotary spectra.      '


        About the Statistics :

            'Following Krauss and Boning (1987), the error in the'
            'Eulerian velocity can be calculated from :          '

            'where sqrt(u`^2) is the standard deviation of Umean '

            'If an estimate of T has not been made in a certain  '
            'grid box (either by autocorrelation or by stream    '
            'function) then ARPRO sets T11 (meridional component)'

            'Vectors are drawn from the centre of each box (use  '
            'the "Grid" option to see the boxes) representing the'
            'mean eulerian velocity in each box. The results are '
            'written to the file "errorbar.asc which should be   '
            'examined if more detail (including U* and dU*) is   '
            'required (U* is the root of the mean square of dU). '
            'Note - if rows or cols =1 then the values are       '
            'written out on screen rather than plotted...        '
            '                                                    '
            'As well as the above, estimates of K (the eddy      '
            'diffusivity) and L (the integral time scale) as well'
            'as their associated errors are produced.            '
            '                                                    '
            '*The best method to obtain good statistical results '
            '*is to choose the area and floats required, then    '
            '*"T by autocorrelation" and then run "Errors".      '
            '                                                    '
            'Two good references for the statistics are :        '

        MOVIE :

            'One first has to choose the type of map on which the'
            'movie will be projected - either "Colour map" or    '
            '"Black and white map" and specify whether bathymetry'
            'is required. Once the map is plotted, choose the    '
            'option "Overlay floats" and follow the directions.  '
            'The movie is run five times, before providing the   '
            'option of replaying.                                '


        PLOT MAP :

            'One first has to choose the type of map on which the'
            'movie will be projected - either "Colour map" or    '
            '"Black and white map" and specify whether bathymetry'
            'is required. Once the map is plotted, return to the '
            'ARPRO window and either "Overlay current float"   or'
            '"Overlay Rossby vectors". After overlaying a float  '
            'return to "Open" (in the "FILE" option) then choose '
            '"Overlay.." again. To change the characteristics of '
            'the track plotting, one has to go to the window     '
            '"Selecting Map Characteristics", make the required  '
            'changes, and DO NOT PRESS "PLOT" but return to the  '
            '"Overlay current float" option...This may seem a    '
            'little complicated, but its easy once you are used  '
            'to it !                                             '


        FLOAT SUMMARY :


            'Plots a summary of the current float : the track of '
            'the float and its temperature and pressure. The user'
            'must first load a float (note: if the float has been'
            'lowpassed then this is the data used for the        '
            'summary). Choose whether bathymetry is required.    '
            'Make the required choices in the "Selecting Map     '
            'Limits screen. By using the left and right mouse    '
            'buttons the user may zoom and out of the any of the '
            'axes. This is useful to ensure the float track fills'
            'the tracking window.                                '
            'This routine was written to produce a printed       '
            'summary for use in e.g. a report, and so on a p.c.  '
            'the entire figure may not fit on the screen (but    '
            'the printed figure should be fine).                 '


        PATHS :

            'Sets paths for data.                                '
