Summer Institute on Earth-Surface Dynamics 2011

Introduction

NCED (National Center for Earth Surface Dynamics) and CSDMS combined forces for the Summer Institute on Earth-Surface Dynamics, SIESD, designed to engage young scientists in a focused topic in Earth-surface dynamics. The topic of the 2011 Summer Institute was Coastal Processes and the Dynamics of Deltaic Systems. NCED shares expertise on laboratory experiments and fieldwork and CSDMS brings numerical modeling experiments. This two-week institute invited PhD students and young faculty to participate in integrated modeling.

Impressions

The lab at St Anthony Falls
Group of students analyzing river networks

Discussing the experimental results
Cutting up the experimental delta

Looking at the details of the sediment deposits
Analyzing delta evolution

Eligibility

  • SIESD invites graduate students, postdocs and young faculty (three years from PhD) and those who primarily teach undergraduates. Applications from women, minorities and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged.

Summer School 2011 Topic

Summer Institute 2011 focused on ‘Coastal Processes and the Dynamics of Deltaic Systems’. Students learned from world experts about coastal processes and predictive evolution of deltas. They ran an experiment at the St Anthony Fall hydraulic laboratory. We will look at coupled models of erosion, deposition, and vegetation; responses to up- and downstream anthropogenic perturbations; and how predictive modeling can be used for restoration of these delicate ecosystems. Hands-on learning opportunities included the exploration of physical experiments as well as an intensive unit on the use of delta modeling tools available through CSDMS. The Summer Institute is designed to be a stimulating environment for learning, bonding, mentoring and life-long academic partnerships.

We expect to jointly teach this summer school again in 2012. Will keep you posted....
