Describe processes represented by the model ThawLake1D Model couples a permafrost thermal model, a lake ice model and a subsidence model. It models heat conductio through a lake-permafrost system, evaluating temperature with depth.
Describe key physical parameters and equations - permafrost thermal model: calculates thermal condutivity and specific heat capacity

- lake ice model: conduction of heat within water depending on incoming solar radiation - subsiidence model: melted permafrost cells with excess ice are subsided by the excess ice content. A talik can form under a lake

Describe length scale and resolution constraints 1D

Uppermost 10 m has high resolution gridcells (0.05m). Below 10 m to 500 m depth, grid cells are coarser (1m).

Describe time scale and resolution constraints Simulations are run at daily time step

Total simulation duration is typically over 100's of years.

Describe any numerical limitations and issues

Describe available calibration data sets Model is designed and calibrated for Alaska Coastal Plain.

We calibrated the model against temperature data in the subsurface from the Drew point, AK, USGS meteorological station.

Do you have current or future plans for collaborating with other researchers? Yes, the project is ongoing at CU Boulder and with USGS partners
