Model description

Model type: Modular model for the coastal domain.
Description: A process-response model simulating the evolution and stratigraphy of fluvial dominated deltaic systems in two dimensions, based on simple approximations of erosion and deposition. The model is called DELTASIM, and was initially presented by Overeem et al. (2003) as AQUATELLUS. DELTASIM has several improvements, the main algorithm has been revised and the output can be presented as probabilistic output.

Technical information

Supported platforms: Windows
Programming language: Visual basic
Model was developed started from: 1997 and development still takes place.
To what degree will the model become available: As source code
Current license type: --
Memory requirements: --
Typical run time: --

Input / Output description

Input parameters: Simulation time and time step, Initial profile, Stochastic sediment input (t), Sea level (t), Sediment transport parameters (i.e. travel distances)
Input format: ASCII, menu-driven
Output parameters: 2D longitudinal profiles, multiple grainsizes, probabilistic stratigraphic sections.
Output format: ASCII
Post-processing software (if needed): simple visualizations are automated in user-friendly GUI, for more specific visualisations standard plotting software is needed.
Visualization software (if needed): yes: --

Process description

Processes represented by model: longterm 2D deltaic sedimentation and clinoform formation for fluvial dominated deltas
Key physical parameters & equations: see references
Length scale & resolution constraints: Model is intended to generate stratigraphy for 2D profiles of large deltas (100's of km's)
Time scale & resolution constraints: Mostly tested for Holocene applications (>10,000yrs), potentially longer time scales.
Numerical limitations and issues : --

Testing

Available calibration data sets: Theoretical tests, Volga case study, Kura case study, (see references)
Available test data sets: Caspian sea experiences extremely rapid sea level fluctuation, making it a great test data set for coastline shifts.
Ideal data for testing: Known boundary conditions, discharge, and sediment load as well as basin fluctuations.
Dated stratigraphic profiles in deltas that are mostly fluvial dominated, ie lake deltas.

User groups

Currently or plans for collaborating with: Overeem is developing an educational version of DELTASIM
