Funded PhD position in the Coastal Risks and Engineering Lab at UCF
University of Central Florida, Florida, United States
Start reviewing process: 11 October 2021

Dear colleagues,

We have an opening for a fully funded PhD position in the Coastal Risks and Engineering (CoRE) Lab at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando. Information on our research group can be found here: https://core-lab.weebly.com/.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr. Thomas Wahl in the Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering Department (CECE) and National Center for Integrated Coastal Research (UCF Coastal). The candidate will work on an interdisciplinary project funded by the National Science Foundation alongside many partners across the U.S. to improve the understanding and governance of co-evolving hazards (find more information on the project here: https://sites.rutgers.edu/mach/).

In particular, the candidate’s research will include developing and using statistical methods to assess the spatio-temporal evolution of coastal hazards. This work will be informed and complemented by coupled hydrodynamic numerical model experiments and analyzing climate and storm characteristics in close collaboration with our partners.

Required background and skills: MSc in Civil Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, Geosciences, Physical Oceanography, or another relevant field; proficiency in one of the common technical programing languages such as MATLAB, R, or Python; interest to work in a large interdisciplinary team.

One or more of the following skills are desired: experience in extreme value analysis, machine learning, and/or Bayesian methods; previous involvement in compound flooding assessments.

In our lab we value inclusion and diversity and particularly welcome applications from students currently under-represented in STEM fields.

Please send your application package including a cover letter, updated resume, and contacts of two references to t.wahl@ucf.edu. The start date for the position is Spring or Fall 2022. The position will be open until filled but review of applications will begin October 11th.

Please do not hesitate to contact me under the email address listed above in case you have additional questions.

Kind regards,

Thomas
