Postdoc Position in Hydraulic Modeling at Penn State
Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, United States
Start reviewing process: 1 July 2020

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Penn State University has a fixed-term (30 months) postdoc research associate opening starting in the fall of 2020 or spring 2021. This position is funded through a project to research on the selection and use of flow resistance values in two-dimensional hydraulic models such as SRH-2D and HEC-RAS 2D. Two-dimensional models are increasingly popular in practice. However, there are widespread misunderstanding and misuse of the flow resistance parameters (i.e., Manning’s n) in these models. The product of this project will be used as a guidance for practitioners.

Job responsibility: Under the guidance of the PI and collaborators from industry, the major responsibility of the research associate is to carry out the research tasks in the project, which include literature survey, data collection and model building, result analysis and synthesis, report and guideline drafting.

Requirements and qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in civil engineering or related fields with a focus on hydraulics, environmental fluid mechanics, or water resources in general. The applicant must have prior experience with computational modeling, in particular the understanding of flow resistance and its quantification (e.g., with Manning’s n or Chezy coefficient). Experience with SRH-2D, HEC-RAS 2D, or any other hydraulics model is welcome.

To be considered for this position or if you need more information, please contact Dr. Xiaofeng Liu (xzl123@psu.edu). Dr. Liu’s research group webpage: http://water.engr.psu.edu/liu/. Due to the current hiring restriction at Penn State due to COVID-19, please send a copy of CV and cover letter to Dr. Liu for initial consideration. Formal hiring process will resume once the situation gets better.
