Coastal WG Discussion

As the CSDMS annual meeting approaches, we should be thinking about the tasks we are charged with (please see Dec. 20 message included all the way at the bottom of the page). We will focus on these tasks during multiple Working Group breakout sessions in a few weeks, but since not everyone can travel to Boulder, we will start our discussions online. Breakout sessions will focus on:

1) The long-term plans for the Working Group, to become part of the new CSDMS 5-Year Strategic Plan. We will build on our current plans, listed in the Coastal Working Group section, page 17 & 18 of the Five-Year Strategic Plan , and updated in reports from recent WG meetings (Coastal_Reports). Question: what priorities should we add?

2) The medium- and short-term WG plans. Question: what are the first steps toward our additional long-term goals?

3) Prioritizing a model to make coupling-ready (refactoring the code with a Basic Model Interface). This task will start with nominations of models that would be advantageous scientifically to couple to other models (of other Earth subsystems, coastal or otherwise, or of other processes), and which have enough enthusiasm from people close to the code to do the coding work (and/or find funding to support this work; CSDMS Integration Facility personnel will be there to help with the final stages, but limited Integration Facility resources require us to do the bulk of it--or find funding to support Integration Facility personnel). Question: what coastal models best fit these criteria?

4) We will kick off the new Coastal Vulnerability initiative! Question: what should the scope of this initiative be, what are the associated categories of people to form the new group?

Dear Working Group,

This is an exciting time for CSDMS, and especially for the Coastal WG! With renewed support from NSF we are launching new initiatives that our WG will play a key role in: 1) ecosystems and strong couplings with physical process in landscapes and seascapes; 2) couplings with anthropogenic processes; and 3) coastal vulnerability.

In addition, our WG is charged with writing a new 5-year Science Plan, and with identifying (at least) one model to add to the repository of couple-able models each year. These two tasks overlap with each other, of course. Building on our success stories from the past five years, and ongoing priorities (Coastal_Reports), we will need to put our heads together to decide what scientific questions are most compelling and urgent, and what model development/model coupling tasks are needed to address them--as well as what research groups or individuals are motivated to put in the coding work to make it happen (which likely involves writing a proposal, perhaps involving CSDMS Integration Facility collaborators to lend expert help). The motivation to actively join in these efforts, along with helping facilitate exciting science, includes the fact that the priorities the WG identifies will feature prominently in the 5-year plan, written primarily for NSF Program Officers.

So, please come join our discussions at the CSDMS Annual Meeting in March! Given all the Working Group work to be started, this year's annual meeting will focus heavily on WG (and inter-WG) meeting time. Along with formulating plans and priorities, we will define a WG steering committee, with representatives from a range of coastal sub-environments and science communities. We will start the discussions online before the Annual Meeting, but please make plans soon to attend the meeting.
