  CSDMS Standard Names — Process Name + Quantity Name Pattern

  • This page gives a list of examples of the very common Process Name + Quantity Name pattern for constructing Quantity names. As of 9/13/14, this list contained 618 quantity names that fit this pattern.
  • This pattern usually combines a one-word process name with a one-word base quantity name like:
altitude, angle, area, capacity, charge, code, coefficient, constant, cost, current, date, density, depth, diameter, distance, duration, efficiency, energy, factor, fee, flux, force, frequency, heat, height, index, intensity, length, mass, number, parameter, period, pressure, price, radius, rate, ratio, speed, stress, temperature, time, viscosity or voltage.
  • The base quantity rate can be combined with the majority of process names to generate a new quantity name (whether listed or not).
  • Process Names are generally nouns that are derived from verbs by changing the ending, but the ing ending is often dropped in this pattern.
  • The abbreviation IML stands for "In Main List" and marks quantity names that have been used in the main list of CSDMS Standard Variable Names.
  • Note that the base quantity name time can be used in two different ways, as an actual time or as a duration. When possible it is preferable to use the base quantity name duration or period when the quantity is a duration. Consider the common, equivalent quantities: flying_time and flight_duration, for example. Note that recovery_time actually refers to a duration (and recovery_duration is also used) while arrival_time refers to a time.
