===Introduction===
CSDMS plans on strong and fully integrated Education and Knowledge Transfer components. CSDMS EKT (''currently '''{{#ask: [[User:+]][[Working group member::Education and Knowledge Transfer (EKT) Working Group]]

}}''' members'') will focus its knowledge transfer efforts on three CSDMS end-user groups: researchers, planners, and educators. CSDMS will target:
*Researchers with model and visualization tools for the testing of hypotheses in support of data interpretation, and development of field programs. The archiving of benchmark data sets, documented source code, and the ability to download models with user-friendly graphical interfaces are key components of the Center's knowledge transfer objective.
*Planners with decision-making tools to run scenarios, and relate GIS output to environmental factors and land use while quantifying uncertainties.
*Educators with pre-packaged models to help illustrate surface processes, tools to build intuition with “what-if”-type model runs, case studies that integrate field data and model simulations, and prepare exploratory exercises for students. The Web-Data Specialist and EKT Specialist will be expected to work closely together and will be carefully selected to have good popular-science writing skills.

Our principal Education audiences are university students, professionals, teachers at the secondary school and college levels, and the general public. Resources to support this effort will not become available until the third year of the CSDMS effort, due to NSF budget reductions. CSDMS will jump-start our Education and KT activities by coordinating them closely with the EKT programs at the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics ([http://www.nced.umn.edu/ NCED]), a funded NSF Science and Technology Center devoted to developing a predictive, quantitative understanding of the processes that shape the Earth's Surface.

To help us understand the needs of both instructors and students in undergraduate and graduate courses, we are gathering information about how surface process modeling is currently being taught. We have already reviewed the course catalogs of 36 universities in the U.S. and identified CSDMS-relevant courses in a range of departments ([[media:2010_CSDMS_semiannual_report-APPENDIX1.pdf|click here for the results]]).

We would appreciate direct feedback from instructors to supplement and verify these results as we continue to expand our educational and modeling tools. Ultimately, one of our goals is to provide user-friendly, hands-on modeling exercises using the [[Help:Ccaffeine_GUI|CSDMS Modeling Tool]] and the CSDMS [[Help:HPCC_Contents|High Performance Computing Cluster]]. Course instructors can then easily adopt these exercises for their own earth surface processes courses.

The ongoing and uncontrolled release of oil from the Macondo well into the Gulf of Mexico, which began on April 20th, represents an ecological and economic crisis of unprecedented magnitude. Unlike most oil spills, which are predominantly two-dimensional surface events, this event has a distinctly three-dimensional character. This is partly due to the extreme conditions and chemistry that prevail at the well depth of 5000 feet (e.g. very high pressure and low temperature), the complex 3D pathways as oil travels over that distance and also because the heavy use of chemical dispersants has resulted in smaller droplets that rise very slowly. Largely due to the 3D character of this event, currently available models are not well-suited for predicting how this oil will move throughout the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Indeed, the large plumes of oil that have been detected lingering at depths of 1500 and 3000 feet were not predicted by existing models (to our knowledge) and are still very poorly understood. These plumes represent an enormous volume of oil (estimated at roughly 4 miles by 10 miles by 600 feet), the ultimate fate of which is difficult to predict. As of June 3, 2010, all efforts to stop the flow from the Macondo well have failed and the "cut and cap" effort is underway.  Two relief wells (3 miles below the seafloor) are also in progress but, if successful, are not expected to be completed until August 2010. 

The purpose of this discussion page is to share information regarding this event that may be useful to CSDMS members who have an interest in modeling various aspects of it.  For example, the NSF is making Rapid Response Research Grants (RAPID) available now for Gulf of Mexico oil spill research, see: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10060/nsf10060.jsp.

There are two leading "deep-water blowout" models which model the complex physics of deep-water releases of oil and gas such as this.  They are called [http://www.cdogmodel.com '''CDOG'''] written by [http://www.clarkson.edu/cee/faculty/yapa.html Dr. P. Yapa] and colleagues and [http://www.sintef.no/units/chem/environment/images/deep-blow.pdf '''DeepBlow,''']written by Dr. Oistein Johansen.  Unfortunately, neither of these is an open-source model. Both of them are driven by ocean currents from a hydrodynamic ocean model. See the References section below for more info.

The ongoing and uncontrolled release of oil from the Macondo well into the Gulf of Mexico, which began on April 20th, represents an ecological and economic crisis of unprecedented magnitude. Unlike most oil spills, which are predominantly two-dimensional surface events, this event has a distinctly three-dimensional character. This is partly due to the extreme conditions and chemistry that prevail at the well depth of 5000 feet (e.g. very high pressure and low temperature), the complex 3D pathways as oil travels over that distance and also because the heavy use of chemical dispersants has resulted in smaller droplets that rise very slowly. Largely due to the 3D character of this event, currently available models are not well-suited for predicting how this oil will move throughout the Gulf of Mexico and beyond. Indeed, the large plumes of oil that have been detected lingering at depths of 1500 and 3000 feet were not predicted by existing models (to our knowledge) and are still very poorly understood. These plumes represent an enormous volume of oil (estimated at roughly 4 miles by 10 miles by 600 feet), the ultimate fate of which is difficult to predict. As of June 3, 2010, all efforts to stop the flow from the Macondo well have failed and the "cut and cap" effort is underway.  Two relief wells (3 miles below the seafloor) are also in progress but, if successful, are not expected to be completed until August 2010. 

The purpose of this discussion page is to share information regarding this event that may be useful to CSDMS members who have an interest in modeling various aspects of it.  For example, the NSF is making Rapid Response Research Grants (RAPID) available now for Gulf of Mexico oil spill research, see: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10060/nsf10060.jsp.
