|CSDMS meeting abstract presentation=This clinic will be a hands-on exercise in making quantitative 3D digital models and orthomosaics from a collection of photographs, focusing on small to medium landscape scenes (think beach ripples to a small dune system). We will provide some background theory and work through the steps of constructing and assessing the accuracy of the model using commercial software (Agisoft Metashape). Pitfalls and best practices will be explained. Students are invited to bring their own imagery (check with us for guidance on best practices for image collection) or we will provide some, and we might collect some prior to the classroom portion. Any laptop will work, but those with NVIDIA graphics cards will be faster.
|CSDMS meeting abstract=Extensive overwash occurred on North Core Banks during Hurricane Florence (September 2018). The washover deposits were partially revegetated when, a year later, sound-side inundation and outwash caused substantial erosion during Hurricane Dorian (September 2019). Repeat aerial mapping shows that reestablishment of vegetation on deposits that partially filled the washout channels is slow to non-existent. We suggest washout site revegetation is delayed by lack of organic material, slowing dune growth, and extending vulnerability to overwash. Washout channels often erode several meters of beach, berm, and back-barrier platform and are later filled with inorganic marine sands deposited as spits, bars, and overwash. By contrast, washover deposits can contain ripped-up vegetation and (partially) bury pre-existing vegetation, providing seeds, rhizomes, and plant fragments to generate new growth. We propose a heuristic model of vegetation growth following a sigmoidal curve that depends on an initial (seed) concentration and show that simulations with this model using realistic overwash recurrence, reproduces our observations of slow revegetation in deposits on former washout channels.
{{CSDMS meeting abstract template 2024
|CSDMS meeting abstract=There is growing recognition that outwash events are potent agents of morphological change in some coastal regions. Outwash associated with inundation from the back side (bay, lagoon, sound, or marsh) occurred during Hurricane Harvey in Texas (2017) and Hurricane Dorian in North Carolina (2019). In both cases, floodwaters crossed the barrier islands and drained to the ocean through gaps in the primary dune lines, incising deep (~2-m) channels 30- 100-m wide in the islands and depositing the sand in the ocean. In both cases, partial recovery occurred within days and months as nearshore and beach processes generated spits, bars, berms, and overwash fans that rebuilt the beach and closed the channels, creating a series of ponds. Normally, washover deposits are quickly (1 – 2 years) revegetated with beach grasses that trap wind-driven sand and initiate dune building. However, in Texas, North Carolina, and several other locations where outwash channels were observed, the channels have remained largely unvegetated and no dunes have appeared. We have adapted a simple conceptual model to account for these observations. The model argues that the rate of vegetation growth depends, at least partially, on the amount of vegetation already present. In the case of overwash, material is deposited on older washover fans or platforms that contain live plants, seeds, rhizomes, and other organic material, and (following others) we suggest that the amount of vegetative material is a function of washover-deposit thickness. In contrast, when washout channels are filled, none of that material is present, and our model assigns these deposits very low initial amounts of vegetative material. Thus, vegetation growth on the two landscapes occurs at different rates, and the former outwash channels are unable to build elevation as quickly, leaving them continuously exposed to overwash events. A quantitative implementation of this model provides results that match well with observations at several sites.
|CSDMS meeting abstract=North Core Banks, a long (36-km), low (2.6-m mean elevation), narrow (~1200-m) barrier island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, was inundated from the sound side and severely eroded by outwash during Hurricane Dorian (September 2019). As the fast-moving Category-1 hurricane moved offshore after a brief landfall at Cape Hatteras, winds shifted to the northwest, forcing a ~2.5-m surge onto the back side of the island. Deeply incised drainages were cut into the island as water ran from the washover platform to the ocean through gaps in the primary dune line, removing ~16% of the island volume. This style of storm impact is less common than typical ocean-side attack by waves and storm surge, and rarely modeled. Model simulations may provide insight into the fate of sands eroded during these unusual and difficult-to-measure events. We used the COAWST modeling system to simulate conditions during Dorian for a typical segment of the island using topography and landcover derived from pre-storm mapping using aerial imagery. The high-resolution (~2-m horizontal grid spacing) model was forced by output from a coarser-resolution model that provided water levels, incident waves, and alongshore currents. The model reproduced the steep cross-island water-level gradients inferred from high-water marks and wrack deposits, and generated washout channels ~2 m deep, cut through pre-existing low spots in the primary dune line. We evaluated model performance by comparing the simulated topography with post-storm topography derived from aerial imagery. The location, depth, and width of the simulated channels matched observations well, but the inland portion of the modeled channels were more linear than the observed dendritic drainages. Model simulations were sensitive to water-level forcing, sediment size, and vegetation patterns. The simulated channels extended into the surf zone and deposited sediments in relatively deep water. This transfer of sand from the island core to the nearshore has implications for barrier island evolution, and the ability to model it with COAWST demonstrates the generality of its morphology components.
|CSDMS meeting abstract=The stratigraphic record is the product of sedimentary processes acting over time. The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) includes algorithms for the processes of erosion, deposition, and mixing of both non-cohesive (sandy) and cohesive (muddy) sediment, and routines capable of tracking the evolution of event-scale stratigraphy with layers as fine as a few grain diameters thick. Thus ROMS allows users to relate process with product over time scales ranging from a few seconds to years, over vertical space scales of 0.1 mm to meters, and over horizontal space scales of meters to hundreds of kilometers. ROMS requires users to specify the number of bed layers to be tracked at compile time. This improves model efficiency on parallel systems, but complicates the task of tracking stratigraphic evolution. In addition to the number of layers, users can control the minimum and maximum layer thickness and the initial stratigraphy. The effect of these choices and the success of the stratigraphy routines is demonstrated with models of idealized estuaries, deltas, and continental shelves.
