We will explain and practice GRASS GIS data management and concepts, and demonstrate them on examples of efficient LiDAR point cloud, raster, and vector data processing.

The clinic will begin with a brief introduction to the GRASS GIS software and continue with a hands-on tutorial exploring coastal evolution through a LiDAR timeseries of Bald Head Island in North Carolina, USA. Finally, we will explore some of the inundation and flood modeling tools available in GRASS GIS. The tutorial will be formatted in a series of Jupyter Notebooks executed in a cloud-based (or locally installed) JupyterLab environment, taking advantage of the latest GRASS GIS Python features for Jupyter, including 2D, 3D, webmap, and temporal visualizations.
|CSDMS meeting abstract presentation=This clinic will introduce participants to GRASS GIS tools with a focus on applications for coastal hazards analysis including flooding and coastal evolution.

By the end of the clinic, participants will have hands-on experience with:
- Setting up GRASS GIS Projects and importing data
- Creating high-quality DEMs from LiDAR point clouds and computing topographic parameters
- Deriving shorelines from the DEMs
- Animating changes in topography over time and computing erosion rates
- Generating simplified storm surge inundation timeseries
|CSDMS meeting abstract=In the piedmont and coastal plain of NC, riparian buffers and vegetated swales are important tools for communities to manage the health of their streams. However, determining where vegetated swales and buffers would have the greatest impact in a watershed can be complex. In this study, we present a methodology for modeling the impact of riparian buffers on stormwater runoff using the SIMWE (SIMulated Water and Erosion) model, implemented with GRASS GIS in a Jupyter Notebook via the recent grass.jupyter package. We simulate a 30-minute heavy rainstorm with 3 different scenarios: no buffer (status quo), a 15m buffer and a 30m buffer and account for water caught by vegetation interception, slowed water velocity and increased infiltration in the buffer or swale. Our study area is a small watershed in the headwaters of the Marsh Swamp stream near Clinton, NC. The Marsh Swamp watershed is in the Atlantic coastal plain and is dominated by agricultural fields and commercial swine feeding operations, both of which contribute to low water quality in streams and increased susceptibility to flooding. This workflow lays the foundation for developing accessible open source tools for stakeholders to explore the efficacy of different buffer implementation strategies across a watershed.
{{CSDMS meeting abstract template 2023
|CSDMS meeting abstract=Riparian buffers are undeveloped, vegetated areas along the banks of water bodies that separate the waterbody from other land uses such as developments or agricultural fields. Buffers are well known for improving stream health since they capture nutrient and sediment runoff, increase infiltration and reduce overland water flow velocity.

In the piedmont and coastal plain of NC, riparian buffers are an important tool for communities to manage the health of their streams since a majority of the land is developed or used for agriculture. However, deciding where instituting buffers would (1) have the greatest impact on flooding and (2) are most desirable for community stakeholders can make these changes difficult to implement.

In this study, we present a methodology for modeling the impact of riparian buffers on runoff during a flood event with GRASS GIS. Our study area will be a small section of stream in the headwaters of the Marsh Swamp stream near Clinton, NC. The Marsh Swamp watershed is in the Atlantic coastal plain and is dominated by agricultural fields and commercial swine feeding operations, both of which contribute to low water quality in streams and increased susceptibility to flooding. We will simulate a 30-minute heavy rainstorm with 3 different scenarios: no buffered (current), a 15m buffer and a 30m buffer. We will account for how riparian buffers remove water caught by vegetation interception, slow water velocity and increase infiltration. This workflow lays the foundation for developing accessible open source tools for stakeholders to explore the efficacy of different buffer implementation strategies across a watershed.
